Natural wood stir sticks. Wooden stir sticks are commonly used for making agar slants. Placing a part of a wooden craft stick into the middle of an agar slant has been proven to prolong the life and viability of the mycelium within the slant significantly. Often times mycelium within the slant will colonize the craft stick and remain viable, even if the mycelium that has colonized the agar has died. Using wooden craft sticks within culture slants prolongs the viability of agar slants. Simply soak the wood sticks in water for 30 minutes place it in the center of your culture tube, then fill with agar and sterilize.
